7th Grade Exploratories
Family/Consumer Science- 7th grade family and consumer science exploratory focuses on the financial literacy standards in the Social Studies and Employability areas of the Iowa Core and the family and consumer sciences. We will be using a Foundations in Personal Finance curriculum and banking activities to focus on income, savings and investing, and risk management, debit and credit, and budgeting.
Gateway To Technology- Design and Modeling: Students discover the design process and develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives.
Music- This class teaches students the history of American music. We go back to talk about music’s role in the Civil War and discuss how music has changed leading up to present-day genres.
21st Century Skills- This exploratory class is designed to introduce students to multiple applications in the Google Apps Suite. Students learn practical digital skills in this project-based class where students create and connect what they are learning to real life.
Health-The health exploratory focuses on the human body. Students are exposed to all of the body systems and study in depth specific systems to understand how their body systems are to function. There is an emphasis on promoting healthy behavior and to increase an overall understanding of the human body.
8th Grade Exploratories
8th Family/Consumer Science – The 8th grade family and consumer science exploratory focus on the nutrition and wellness and food production and services standards in family and consumer sciences. The students learn and work with nutrition and the food plate, reading a recipe, tools of the kitchen, table setting and manners, and safety and sanitation. They then practice and demonstrate those life skills in kitchen labs.
Gateway To Technology – Automation and Robotics: Students trace the history, development, and influence of automation and robotics as they learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Students use the VEX Robotics platform to design, build and program real-world objects.
Ag Science- The Monticello Middle School Agricultural Education Program will provide opportunities to learn leadership skills, care of animals, plants, and the environment, how to use tools safely and how agriculture affects the economy and each of us individually. Students will be able to take advantage of full FFA membership in the Monticello FFA Chapter which will provide additional opportunities outside of the classroom to broaden and enhance their classroom experience locally and around the state. These opportunities will range from community service to leadership events or exhibiting projects at the county or state fairs.
Health– The health exploratory focuses on promoting healthy behaviors and emphasizing on character education. Students study substance abuse, reproductive systems, and healthy relationships to continue to make positive and healthy choices that impact their lives.
Careers- The careers exploratory is designed to introduce students to various career opportunities. Allowing them the opportunity to research various careers. It also teaches students the skills needed to apply for and keep a job.
